My First Professional Victory

My First Professional Victory

After a great tournament with an 11 under par total I won in Arizona

After last week’s Arizona State Open I stayed down in Arizona to play in this week’s Cactus Tour event. Sometimes it gets a little hard being so far away from home, and for some reason I was feeling really home sick and didn’t really feel like playing golf. So I decided to make the best of it and just enjoy myself out there. One way or the other, that attitude paid off.

The first day I hit 17 greens which made golf a whole lot easier, and ended in a round of 69 (-3). Tied for the lead with another girl, Dawn Shockley we had a really good battle on the second day. I have played with her once before in college and she is a great player, this year ending 13th on the money list of the LPGA Futures Tour. We kept going back and forth with birdies on the second day but in the end she ran away with three birdies on the last four holes. I ended the second round in 69, two shots behind Dawn before the final day.

On the final day of the tournament the wind had picked up a lot which made it more challenging out there, but it didn’t seem to affect me that much. I made two birdies on the first two holes and had caught up to Dawn. She then made birdie on number 3 which I responded to with a birdie on the 5th hole. I made one bogey on 7th, but so did she on number 9. We were then again even with nine holes to play. On the 11th hole she made a birdie but I followed up with two more birdies on 12th and 13th thus leading with one shot with five holes to play. On 17th I hit my shot up to just 6 feet, but lipped out for birdie. On the 18th hole I somehow managed to knock it within 4 feet from 90 yards out. Dawn however hit her wedge shot close as well and I knew she would make her putt for birdie before me. So she did, and it was up to my 4 foot putt for the victory. I told myself I would not lip out twice in a row for the victory and I just needed to put a good stroke on my putt. And so I did :) I made the putt for a final round in 67 to win by one shot over Dawn.

The whole tournament seemed to be a battle between just Dawn and me as I had 12 shots down to number 3 after the three rounds. It was such a good and exciting battle and I was so extremely happy that I was able to pull the longest straw! I know it is just a mini tour and perhaps not the best of fields that always participate, but it was more so the manner in which I won that felt like such a great accomplishment. Also it was my first victory as a professional, so that naturally also means a lot to me. Hopefully this will be the first of many to come :)

Thanks for all the kind words and support I have received. It is truly appreciated!
