European Victory

Vagliano Trophy

After a great week in Wales the continent of Europe won the Vagliano Trophy

We concluded the Vagliano Trophy late afternoon on Saturday and it turned out to be such an amazing experience! I had a blast in the 6 days I was in Wales, my team won the title and I made some great new friends.

On Monday I traveled with my Danish teammate Emily who was playing for the Junior Vagliano Trophy (under 16 years). We arrived late in the evening and got to meet our teammates for the week. The team that I was chosen to play for from the continent of Europe consisted of 2 from Germany, 2 from Spain, 1 from Sweden, 3 from France, and then me, all of us playing against a team of 9 from Great Britain and Ireland.

Tuesday we started the first of the three practice rounds on the challenging Royal Portcawl Golf Club. The weather the whole week was not really in favor of us unfortunately, so we had to deal with a lot of wind and rain from time to time. The course played hard because of the tough and undulated greens and the extreme wind from the ocean (which was in view from every single tee box). During the week we players got to know each other better and we had a lot of fun together. One of the tasks for the week was to write the lyrics for an ABBA song we would perform with at the closing dinner, so we definitely had some fun coming up with the right words.

After having attended the opening ceremony the night before, we were ready to play early Friday morning. I played with the Swedish girl Madelene in the morning and despite being behind from hole number one, we were able to turn it around and recover magically from an errand shot on the 18th tee, which got us the victory. In the singles I played well and won, as did most of my teammates. After Fridays play the score was 7½ to 4½ in favor of the European team. On the second and final day I lost my foursome with Madelene but two of the other foursomes won so we just needed to win 3 singles in the afternoon to take home the trophy. And we sure did! I played well and won my match, and so did 5 of my other teammates so it was definitely a solid win! We ended up winning 15½ to 8½.

The whole setup of the tournament with tons of volunteers, caddies, scores, rules officials with every group etc. was awesome. A lot of people were out watching us which only made it more fun. There were some really exciting matches during the tournament, a lot of them ending on the 18th hole. It was so much fun being part of the tournament, and then winning by a big margin only added to it! It was also great to play with some of the best Europeans amateur, among them NCAA Player of the Year Marta Silva from Spain and NCAA Freshman of the year Sophia Popov. We had so much fun together and I am so happy that I got to get this experience before I turn pro in August.

Now back in Denmark I can enjoy a full day of relaxing after the tiring week until the focus turns to the European Team Championship next week. Here I unfortunately have to play against my new found friends and teammates from the Vagliano Trophy, but I am also excited to get to represent Denmark in my last European Team Championship.

Hope everyone is doing well! Take care.
