Down Under

Royal Melbourne

In my second LPGA tournament, I got to travel to Australia and had a great week overall with some great experiences, but unfortunately one shot too many..

The ISPS Handa Women’s Australia Open was an overall great experience. I got down to Melbourne early Sunday morning, a few days earlier than normal to get used to the time change and get in an extra practice round at Royal Melbourne Golf Club. My brother Martin joined me Sunday night having flown across the world from Denmark to caddy for the week.

I had heard good things about the course that supposedly both beautiful and hard, and it surely lived up to all the rumors and then some. In the beginning, I thought the course was good and all that, but the more and more I played it, the more I got to see how much of a championship course it really is. The links look is amazing first off, and then the greens are both fast, firm, and undulated which makes for a hard combination. But the best part is that it is a course that demands every type of shot from you. No two holes look alike and you have to be able to shape the balls both ways coming in to the firm greens.

With the challenging course, I ended up playing it really well. I was never really in much trouble the first round (and believe me, you can end up in trouble at Royal Melbourne) and while it wasn’t the most amazing golf, I was able to save shots around the green with a solid short game. The few bad shots happened at good times and it was a respectable round of +2 which put me tied for 50th place.

The second round however, my misses tended to happen at less favorable times, and the course is not one that favors the low pull hook.. I played pretty well all day but in the end, I hit it in some places that made par impossible. Despite the slight struggle with the long game, which only showed on certain shots, everything else in the game is solid. Therefore, it hurt a little missing the cut by one shot and not getting to play another two rounds at Royal Melbourne, but there were many positives to take away. It’s not the first time I have battled the low left miss and while it will take a little work technically I know I can get it done rather quickly.

Despite a missed cut, I feel close and this week really made me believe that I have the game to make it. A few kinks to work out but other than that I am not far off. Therefore, it was with a positive outlook on things that I took the weekend off and enjoyed Australia with my brother.

Being that it is such a long flight to Down Under, we decided to make a vacation out of it. We stayed with friends here in Melbourne until Friday February 27 and had an absolutely amazing trip. Below are a few pictures from what we did, which included a trip to Melbourne city, beach time, going to a wildlife park, and driving along Great Ocean Road where we spotted several wild koalas, and let me tell you those koala bears are even cuter up close :)

All the best,
